About Us

Superior Hardwoods has been in operation since 1976 in Montezuma, Indiana, the heart of the finest Appalachian forests. Superior has built a reputation as a top performer in the hardwood lumber industry, and continues to raise the bar in technology, progression and service to our customers.

By the early 1990’s, Superior had expanded to include an additional location outside of Montezuma and boasted the largest inventory of logs in the State of Indiana. The reputation of Superior and its sister company soon reached beyond the Mid-west, to the West Coast and overseas markets. Because of Superior’s location, it holds a distinct freight advantage when it comes to shipping to the West Coast. Due to the broad diversity of hardwoods that grow in the surrounding area, it is able to accommodate the ever expanding overseas markets.

One facet of Superior Hardwoods that competitors have been unable to duplicate is an experienced staff of foresters that began building relationships with landowners the day Superior opened her doors. Superior is known as a fair and just entity when it comes to payment for timber, and because of this, there is a strong feeling of trust associated with the Superior Hardwoods name. Good relationships with our growers have allowed Superior to receive and log the best timber in Indiana, and this continues to the present day.

In 1999, J.T. Shannon Lumber Company acquired both operations that comprised Superior Hardwoods. Once acquired, Superior was consolidated into one large facility in Montezuma and improvements were added. These included sorting equipment, a waste-fired boiler, and dry lumber storage facilities. Going into the third millennia, Superior Hardwoods has continued to expand; in March of 2007, we completed an 4 million dollar sawmill expansion.

With the ever-increased dedication to providing “Superior” hardwood lumber and “Superior” customer service, the future looks bright for Superior Hardwoods.
